How Does IPL Treatment Work?

IPL is a skin treatment that uses light energy to target a specific color in the skin.

Using heat, your body rids itself of dead cells and unwanted material. In addition, IPL devices send out a range of light waves that can assist in treating various skin conditions.

IPL is a treatment used for skin revitalization that can glow up your complexion. It also doesn’t hurt other body parts, so recovery is easy.

What to Expect During IPL Treatment

Before the procedure, don’t:

  • Tan in the sun, in a tanning bed, or using tanning creams for four weeks before you go.
  • It’s not recommended that you wax, get a chemical peel, or have collagen shots for two weeks before this procedure, as it could leave the skin too sensitive to endure these treatments.
  • Do not wear strong-scented perfumes, makeup, or deodorants to prevent skin irritation.
  • Aspirin, or another medication that causes blood to clot less, can lead to more bleeding.
  • It’s important to talk with your doctor before starting any medication that might make you more sensitive to the sun, such as doxycycline.

To start, our dermatologist will rub the gel on your clean skin. You’ll wear dark glasses to protect your eyes. The handheld IPL device will go directly onto your skin, and the session should last 20-30 minutes. More extensive areas could take up to an hour or more.

The treatment consists of light pulses. They don’t hurt much, but it might feel like someone is snapping a rubber band on you before applying the numbing cream. Of course, our expert will give you more information on this during your consultation.

What Recovery From IPL Treatment Looks Like

You’ll probably feel a sunburn-like sensation for 4-6 hours after you’ve been in the sun. The best thing to do is use an ice pack or a cool washcloth on your skin.

The skin will turn red within a day or two and may bruise. In some cases, brown spots may darken. These should gradually fall off within a few weeks.

While you heal:

  • If your skin hurts, skip the makeup.
  • Use moisturizing lotion.
  • Protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, and use sunscreen regularly. Choose an SPF of at least 30 and look for a physical blocker like zinc oxide. Apply it every 2 hours, even if it’s not sunny outside.
  • Clean your face with a gentle, non-irritating cleanser

Our dermatologist can advise you when it’s safe to resume your regular skincare routine. It might take a week.

Most people need to complete between 3-7 rounds of treatments. It depends on what condition you’re trying to address. Between sessions, wait 2-4 weeks for the effects of the treatment to be visible. It may take up to a few weeks for any changes in your skin quality to be noticed.
